Women

A Celebration of Women with Art

As a woman, I wanted to bring my own narrative and depict women in different ways, especially black women. Women are sometimes viewed as second-class citizens. Hopefully the art I create can start conversations that will change some of these stereotypical views. Some women are invisible in the mainstream and I want to make them more visible, to show them as the multi-dimensional humans that they are.

A Celebration of Black Women in Art

I am attracted to the theme of women and particularly black women because I have had the great fortune of being raised and surrounded by so many great women. I have often told stories of when I was a little girl growing up, how there were so many wise, intuitive women around me.

Their spiritual insight and knowledge were amazing but at the time I did not know that. I know it now because everything they told me has somehow transpired. Everything they said makes so much sense all these years later. It's kind of magical in a way.

Many of these older women wore head wraps or “tie heads” as they were called. There is something really nostalgic about that for me and it’s culturally relevant.
The pairing of women in my work speaks to sisterhood and having each other’s back which I believe is very important.

Friendship and sisterhood mean that women have a safe space to go to and this can help with mental and emotional health and a greater sense of well-being. The mirroring effect speaks to being able to see ourselves in each other because a lot of times we have similar issues.

I have always had the artistic impulse to exaggerate facial features in my work. I think this is a part of what pulls the viewer in because it enhances visual impact and heightens the presence of the subject.
